For this role it had the middle wheels and tank removed and a body built on it containing the test equipment. Withdrawn from departmental service in 1984. Now being rebuilt to run with new build LBSCR H2 class Atlantic no 32424. It will be fitted with a tank carrying 3500 gallons of water and 4 tons of coal. The number carried is the number given to the tender by the Southern Railway. The tender was completed in 2022 and is now operating with loco 32424. A rear access ladder has been added to the back of the tender, it is thought this is not an original fitting for this type of tender.
