| Additional Notes |
Last coupled to NBR class H 4-4-2 no. 879 (later LNER class C11 no. 9879). Withdrawn from mainline use in November 1936. Though originally fitted with tender number plates by this date most NBR tenders did not carry individual tender numbers and it is not possible to identify this tender's original number. However after withdrawal tenders from withdrawn C11 class locos were always referred to by the LNER by the number of the last locomotive they ran with. Circa March/April 1944 tank removed and a cylindrical tank fitted. This tank had originally been fitted to GER diagram 63 gas holder wagon no 33, later departmental number 962033. Fitted with the new tank the tender was numbered 961880. Locomotives of the LNER Part 10A (p11) published by the RCTS states that it was built to be used as a mobile fuel storage tanker to work with the three early LNER diesel shunters which had been constructed with the ability to be used as emergency generators as well as for shunting. These locos entered service between August and December 1944 and were initially based at Stratford shed. In June 1945 they were transferred to March shed, primarily to work at Whitemoor Yard. The converted tender retained its handbrake and had a through brake pipe. The profile of the vehicle was designed to fit the Poplar loading gauge. Later numbered ADE961880 and then 041957 in the internal user series. Cosmetically restored between December 2024 and February 2025 retaining the circular tank as a relic of the LNER dieselisation policy. |
